The Male Ego

Coming from a world where men are synonymous to macho, and pink should rarely be worn, it is hard to believe that a grown man can cry-that giants can gently weep-that the safety of men can be found in the Male Ego.

HerStory

HerStory chronicles four female poets-by-night struggling with vanity, hardship and cultural confusion. From girlhood to the real world, this multicultural cast takes you on their journey through self-discovery.

Growing Up Daddy

Growing Up Daddy is a one man show performed by world famous Def Poet Kayo. Growing Up Daddy is an honest depiction of what every father endures, when their sense of responsibility challenges their passion.

Generation Verb

Generation Verb strives to continue the African traditional art of storytelling. From the Griots, to Negro spirituals, gospel call and response, the dozens, ragtime, jazz, the oral tradition has been the backbone of storytelling for the African diaspora. Spoken word poetry is a new spin to an old coin.

Verses

VERSES! The only open mic, monologue, short skits, and stand-up comedy musical showcase at the Nuyorican Poets' Cafe. It is the only place to be the last Saturday of each month at the Cafe.

Big Mouth Bout

The Big Mouth Bout™ is a combat-style Blood and Guts Poetry!™ tournament. Spoken word artists of various weight classes and levels go head-to-head in numerous rounds of lyrical warfare, with the winners advancing to the next rounds and the losers going back to their pens and pads.

About

The Company

Kraal “Kayo” Charles founded Kraal Charles Media, LLC. as a way to use spoken word as a vehicle on theatrical stages. Kayo has created numerous traveling original productions combining poetry and theatre, propelling Kraal Charles Media to become one of the fastest growing spoken word organizations in America.

The  Founder

Kraal “Kayo” Charles, a Brooklyn native, is a performer, playwright, and producer. He has traveled extensively around the globe to be featured on stage, television, radio, and film. Kayo began his career on New York City’s poetry slam scene, becoming the youngest Grand Slam Champion at the legendary Nuyorican Poets Café in 1998.

His success translated to the masses as he was the first poet ever to present to audiences of thousands at the Harlem Book Fair and millions at the New Year’s Eve Ball Drop in Times Square. Kayo was highlighted during the inaugural season of HBO’s Def Poetry Jam and in the documentaries, Bone Bristle and Hughes Dreams Harlem.

He has shared the stage with literary legends Maya Angelou, Terry McMillan, and Chinua Achebe and has performed for luminaries Senator Charles Schumer, Congressman Gregory Meeks, and Comptroller William Thompson.
